Anyone stepping into Elisabethenburg Palace — the magnificent Baroque palace that houses one of the Meininger Museums — immediately senses that this is a place filled with stories. Stories of music, theater, art, and remarkable people who shaped European culture. This is where Johannes Brahms conducted his works, where revolutionary theater ideas were born, and where Duke Georg II. created a cultural vision that continues to resonate today.

But how do you make all of this history truly come alive for modern visitors?

Together with the team at the Meininger Museums, we set out to do exactly that: not simply present history, but make it feel alive. The result is a new generation of interactive, location-based tours combined in an official app. Using augmented reality, and cinematic storytelling, a visit to the palace becomes a personal journey of discovery —intuitive, emotional, and entirely at your own pace.

Four Ways to Rediscover the Palace

Every visitor experiences culture differently. That’s why the app offers multiple perspectives on the palace — each telling its own unique story.

The Art Tour

Suddenly, a centuries-old statue begins to move. A historic cityscape seamlessly blends with the present-day surroundings before your eyes. Here, art is not simply explained — it encounters you directly. Through augmented reality, artworks step beyond their frames andreveal the connection between past and present.

The Children’s Tour

For younger guests, the palace transforms into an adventure. Bernie the Dragon accompanies children through the rooms, appearing beside interesting spots, speaking directly to them, and sharing playful stories from the past. History becomes approachable, tangible — and above all, exciting.

The Music Tour

Meiningen is a city deeply rooted in music. Johannes Brahms, Max Reger, and many other composers left their mark here. This tour intentionally avoids visual effects and instead focuses entirely on the emotional power of music, narration, and atmosphere. Visitors are guided through the palace purely through sound and storytelling — calm, immersive, and deeply moving.

The Georg II Tour

The most personal experience may be the new Georg II Tour. At each stop, the Duke himself appears — right where he once lived, worked, and made history. Visitors come face to face with him digitally and gain an intimate insight into his legacy.

One particularly striking moment occurs when visitors hold up their smartphone to compare a real church interior with the artwork depicting the same scene. Past and present merge into a single image, making history feel astonishingly close.

Celebrating the “Theater Duke”

The new tour was created to mark a special occasion: the 200th birthday of Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen —affectionately known as the “Theater Duke.”

Georg II was far more than a ruler. He directed plays, personally designed stage sets, and revolutionized European theater through an entirely new understanding of staging and ensemble performance.

The digital tour beautifully complements the museum’s anniversary exhibitions. Visitors do not simply learn historical facts — they encounter the personality behind them, including the memories he associates with each room.

Technology That Fades Into the Background

What makes the app truly special is not only what it shows, but how it does so. The technology intentionally stays in the background. Precise spatial positioning ensures that animations and digital elements appear exactly where they belong. Clear navigation, audio narration, and subtitles make the experience intuitive and accessible — in both German andEnglish.

Because in the end, the technology serves only one purpose: to connect people with stories.

With the new app experience, the Meininger Museums have created a museum visit that sparks curiosity, creates emotional connections, and stays with visitors long after they leave — while opening entirely new ways to share their rich cultural heritage for years to come.
