Experience the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in augmented reality directly in front of the Düsseldorf and Duisburg Opera Houses. On Wednesday, 8 September 2021, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein presented its new app OpAR. The name of the app already reflects the fusion of “opera” and “AR” – for augmented reality – a technology that makes digital content visible in a real environment. With the help of the app, passers-by can “look inside” these buildings Opera and ballet clips, plays and classical music appear on the displays. From a virtual tour of the stage to information on the history of the houses and playful elements such as a dancer on the balcony or an opera singer who becomes the giant from Wagner’s “Rheingold”, the app invites you to playfully gain insights into the Theater Duisburg and the Düsseldorf Opera House.
The OpAR app will be available for download free of charge in the respective App Store for Android and iOS from 8 September 2021. The augmented reality content starts as soon as the app is used to scan corresponding markers at significant points in front of the Theater Duisburg and the Düsseldorf Opera House.
OpAR was created as part of the project “Das digitale Foyer” (The Digital Foyer), with which the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, together with the FFT Düsseldorf, is opening up new digital spaces for exchange, encounter and creative engagement with the arts and expanding the theatre experience with playful content. The four-year project is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation within the framework of the Fonds Digital. The technical implementation was carried out by the Berlin startup ZAUBAR and its platform for immersive tours.
