Politically persecuted people waited for their trial in the former central remand prison of the Ministry for State Security (MfS). Women who had already been convicted had to work in work squads in the kitchen or as cleaners, men
were deployed in areas such as the car repair shop or carpentry. Around 11,000 people were in pre-trial detention in the complex between 1951 and 1989.
In the permanent exhibition "In Forced Community" at the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, the former largest Stasi prison, the AR application developed by ZAUBAR provides insights into the everyday working life of Stasi prisoners without having to directly intervene in the historical site, which can thus be preserved in its authenticity.
Volumetric recordings of contemporary witnesses convey directly what their everyday life was like. Visitors now spend much more time exploring the exhibition - curators can present more content in an experience-like manner without the exhibition appearing overcrowded - the authenticity of the past is more present.
Last year, the memorial reportedly had almost 308,500 visitors.
