On July 8th, Munich’s vibrant cultural hub took a definitive step into the future of immersive storytelling. As the technology partner powering "Kunstareal Digital Erleben" (Experiencing Kunstareal Digitally), we at ZAUBAR were thrilled to welcome museum visitors, curators, and digital innovators to the soft launch event on the green lawns of the Pinakothek der Moderne.
The event marked the official start of the "kultur.digital.experience" theme days, providing a live environment to test how spatial computing and browser-based augmented reality can enrich physical cultural spaces without boundaries.
The Technology: Immersive Art Without the Friction
For the Kunstareal project, we deployed our state-of-the-art WebXR platform to ensure that entering the digital exhibition space requires zero download friction.
By eliminating the need for traditional app store downloads, visitors simply open their standard smartphone web browser to seamlessly experience augmented reality layered directly onto the iconic architecture of Maxvorstadt. The soft launch allowed us to gather vital real-time feedback from our first wave of users, helping our development team optimize performance and spatial positioning before the wide public launch.
Coming to Life: The 3 Core Stations
The project brings together 5,000 years of art history, transforming objects and artworks from participating museums into playful, interactive real-world experiences. The platform will officially debut at the end of August with three distinct, immersive stations:
- Station 1: "Futuro-Flug" – Die Neue Sammlung
Step into the world of industrial and modern design. This station takes iconic concepts from the design museum and translates them into an interactive digital flight, letting users experience avant-garde form and architecture in open space. - Station 2: "Tortendart" – Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München
Graphic arts are liberated from paper and frames. This station turns the museum’s rich collection of prints and drawings into a dynamic, playful "dart" experience, blending fine art with interactive gamification in the physical environment. - Station 3: "Klettern mit Satdjehuti" – Staatliches Museum Ägyptische Kunst
Ancient history meets modern play. Visitors will look at classical Egyptian antiquity through a gamified lens, interacting with the historical figure of Satdjehuti in an engaging, spatial format that brings the ancient collection right onto the pavement.
What’s Next?
With a highly successful soft launch behind us, our focus shifts entirely to the final polish before the public release at the end of August. Over the next few weeks, our developers team will integrate the insights and data points collected on July 8th to fine-tune the user interface, optimize spatial anchors, and streamline browser performance.
Crucially, the end-of-August launch is just the beginning. As we officially open the platform to the public, ZAUBAR will continue working closely with Kunstareal München and additional participating museums to scale the experience. Over the course of the next year, an additional 7 artworks and experiences will be digitized and integrated into the ecosystem, transforming the entire quarter into an ever-evolving, multi-layered digital canvas.
